Structural steelwork is a cornerstone of modern construction, offering unparalleled strength, durability and versatility. From warehouse frames to showrooms, steel provides the structural framework that brings architectural visions to life.

At Gorton Structures, we offer complete structural steelwork solutions. We believe that understanding the complete process is key to a successful project. From initial estimates and designs to installation, we have curated a guide to expertly guide you through the process.

What is Structural Steelwork?

Structural steelwork refers to the practice of using structural steel, a type of steel specifically manufactured for construction, to create the framework of buildings and other structures. At Gorton Structures, we offer both industrial and agricultural steelwork fabrications ranging from portal frames to cattle housing.

Why is Structural Steel used for Structural Steelwork?

Structural steel is chosen for construction due to its unique properties that are ideal for creating robust, durable frameworks.

High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Steel is an incredibly strong material relative to its weight. This means frames can be built without making the building excessively heavy and puts less stress on the ground and foundations.

Ductility: This is the ability of a material to bend and stretch under stress without fracturing. This is a crucial safety feature because it provides a visible warning if the structure is under too much strain.

Sustainability: Steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world. It can be re-melted and repurposed infinitely without losing its inherent properties, making it an environmentally friendly choice for construction.

Versatility: Structural steel can be fabricated into a wide variety of shapes and sizes to meet the specific requirements of any design. It can be easily joined by welding or bolting.

What is Structural Design?

Structural design is the part of engineering that makes sure a building or structure is safe and solid. Think of it as the process of creating the ‘bones’ of a building. This is a core component of the structural steelwork process in bridging a design vision with the physical reality of a safe, functional building. This process is done through 3D modelling.

What is 3D Modelling?

3D modelling services bring projects to life with ensured precision and detail. This software enables the design team to collaborate with architects, engineers, fabricators and contractors, ensuring all stakeholders are working from the same information.

What is Building Information Modelling?

A great process that is used in construction is BIM – Building Information Modelling. This is a collaborative process that uses 3D models to plan, design, construct and manage buildings and infrastructure. It’s a fundamental shift from traditional paper-based or 2D drafting.

At Gorton Structures, not only do we use an open BIM approach, but we specialise in software like StruCad, Tekla Structures and Advanced Steel. This means our models can integrate with other software allowing for streamline collaboration and enabled projects to meet all the right codes, hold up under pressure and fit your vision perfectly.

Why is 3D Modelling important for Structural Steelwork?

3D modelling software is the baseline of any successful structural steel fabrication. Here’s what our modelling offers at Gorton Structures:

  • Detailed and accurate models you can trust
  • Flexible modelling in any material you need
  • Easy collaboration with an open BIM approach
  • Smooth flow of information from design to construction
  • Complete material lists, fabrication drawings and part details
  • Clear 3D views including erection details

Here at Gorton Structures, our typical turnaround times for fabrication are:

  • Small beams: 2 to 5 working days
  • Medium projects: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Large or complex frames: 3 to 6 weeks

What is the Installation Process for Structural Steelwork?

The installation process typically follows a clear path to ensure the structure is built safely and accurately.

Site Preparation

The construction site is prepared before anything is installed. This involves ensuring the ground is firm, level and accessible for machinery like cranes and trucks.

Erection

This is the most visible part of the process. Cranes are used to lift the fabricated steel components from the ground and place them into their designated positions on the foundation.

Securing

With the structure aligned, all connections are finalised.

Final Checks

Throughout the process, and particularly at key milestones, the erected steel frame is inspected to ensure it matches the engineering drawings precisely. This includes checks for alignment, bolt tightness and overall structural integrity.
